Early Life and Career in South America

José María Del Bó, known professionally as José Delbo, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 9, 1933. From an early age, Delbo showed an exceptional talent for drawing, inspired by the American superhero comics that were popular in Argentine magazines. His fascination with these comics fueled his ambition to become a professional artist. At just 16, he made his professional debut with the Argentine Western comic book "Pancho Negro," which marked the beginning of an illustrious career.

Delbo’s early work was characterized by a focus on Western and war comics, genres that were immensely popular in Argentina at the time. His art was influenced by notable North American artists such as Milton Caniff, John Cullen Murphy, Alex Toth, and Burne Hogarth. Despite his burgeoning success, the political instability in Argentina during the early 1960s forced Delbo to seek opportunities abroad. In 1963, he moved to Brazil, where he continued to develop his craft, working on a variety of comics including war stories for publications like "Almanaque de O Vingador" and "Combate."

Delbo3

During his time in Brazil, Delbo also produced a daily comic strip for the São Paulo newspaper Última Hora, featuring a character named 'Gatinha Paulista.'

However, the tumultuous political climate in Brazil led him to seek more stable opportunities. In 1965, Delbo and his family moved to the United States, a decision driven by his fascination with Westerns and the promise of better job prospects in the American comic book industry.

Breakthrough in the United States

Upon arriving in the United States, Delbo initially took on advertising assignments to support his family. His breakthrough came when fellow Argentinian cartoonist Luis Dominguez introduced him to Charlton Comics. At Charlton, Delbo was able to revisit his favorite genre, Westerns, contributing to titles such as "Outlaws of the West" and "Black Fury." He soon became the primary artist for "Billy the Kid," a series he worked on from 1966 to 1974, which solidified his reputation as a master of Western art.

Delbo’s success at Charlton opened doors at other major publishers. In 1967, he began a long-standing collaboration with Dell Comics, where he worked on numerous TV adaptation comics. His ability to capture the essence of popular television shows in comic form led to work on titles such as "Hogan's Heroes," "The Monkees," "The Brady Bunch," "The Twilight Zone," and "The Mod Squad." These projects showcased Delbo’s versatility and his talent for bringing a wide range of characters and stories to life.

In 1976, Delbo became the regular artist for "Wonder Woman," a role he held until 1981. His tenure on "Wonder Woman" coincided with the popular TV series starring Lynda Carter, and Delbo adeptly transitioned the comic to reflect the show's World War II setting. His dynamic and expressive style brought a fresh energy to the character, making his run one of the most celebrated in the title's history.
