Nifty Gateway NFT Preservation (Phase 1)

NFT Preservation is a critical priority for Nifty Gateway. So we're excited to share the first in a series of updates we'll make on the topic.

As of Friday 3/24, we've changed our minting process for NFTs:

1. Both the tokenURI and baseURI fields reference an IPFS link instead of the https://api.niftygateway.com/ field.
2. This change will eliminate concerns collectors have expressed around NFT metadata if the api.niftygateway.com field isn't accessible.
3. We also create and pin an IPFS file for each NFT containing all the asset metadata.

These changes ensure that a Nifty Gateway minted NFT has all required metadata hosted on a trusted distributed storage solution, Interplanetary File System (IPFS), removing all previous dependencies on Nifty Gateway hosted services.

Why are we using IPFS?

• IPFS is an industry-standard solution to future proof NFT metadata for the following reasons:
• It is a well known and widely used storage solution in the Web3 and NFT space specifically.

What about previously minted NFTs?

These NFTs will be addressed in Phase 2 of this initiative. We are working through a process to upgrade the contract for individual NFTs so they can have the metadata and references hosted and point to IPFS. We will promptly communicate when this feature becomes available.
